When I signed the papers and held the keys to my very first home, I thought I was stepping into a real life fairy tale. I had visions of cozy evenings, perfectly curated spaces, and that intoxicating “I did this on my own” pride.
And to be fair, there is pride. Buying a house on my own was one of the hardest, bravest, most empowering things I’ve ever done. But at the same time homeownership isn’t quite the “party” I hoping it would be!
The reality check came fast.
Between the baseboards that didn’t want to stay up, the fan in the bathroom that led to nowhere, and the walls that were painted 7 different colors. Then came the bills; utilities, property taxes, insurance…each one demanding a bigger slice of my paycheck. Suddenly, every little repair or upgrade was my responsibility. There was no landlord to call, no maintenance number on speed dial. Just me, YouTube tutorials, and the sinking realization that I probably should’ve paid more attention in shop class.
And let’s not even get started on the mental load. Juggling a full-time job, my photography side hustle, a dog that is now adjusting to a whole new normal (farm dog turned town dog), and attempting to date, was already a lot. Add “keep an entire house standing” to the list? Some days it felt like too much.
But here’s the thing: owning a home is messy, hard, expensive; and still one of the most rewarding choices I’ve made. Every project (no matter how small) feels like an investment in my space. Every creak and imperfection tells me, “This is yours.”
So if you’re dreaming of first-time homeownership, here’s my honest advice: expect the mess, the unexpected bills, and the learning curve. But also expect the pride, the growth, and the joy that comes with turning four walls into home.
