Balance. The word sounds peaceful, doesn’t it? Like a yoga pose held gracefully or a perfectly arranged kitchen counter. But in my life, balance looks a little more like a juggling act while standing on a wobbly stool with a gamer boyfriend yelling at his game in the background.
Between work, my photography, managing the house, and navigating the reality of cohabitation, I’ve learned that balance isn’t about having it all together; it’s about not completely falling apart.
Some weeks, the house is spotless but I haven’t touched my camera. Other weeks, I’m knee-deep in editing photos while laundry piles up in corners and dinners look a lot like takeout. And honestly? That’s okay.
What’s helped me the most are little systems. A quick daily reset checklist keeps my space from spiraling (grab my free ADHD-Friendly Reset Checklist here), and I rely heavily on tools like my weekly planner and noise-canceling headphones when I need to focus on editing.
I’ve stopped chasing the Pinterest-perfect version of balance. Instead, I focus on asking myself: What needs me most right now? Sometimes it’s my senior dog needing comfort when her separation anxiety kicks in. Sometimes it’s work deadlines. And sometimes, it’s just me needing a quiet moment to breathe.
I may not have it all balanced equally, but I’ve got it balanced enough to keep moving forward, and maybe that’s what balance really is.
